Local is ok, but global is much better. In my opinion.
I make 75% of my sales from online sells on my website. Which works perfect for me.
There is much less time involved in internet worm sales than local sales. Local people want to come out and ask you a million questions and there is a LOT more time involved. Time is money.
So, what I do is offer one Saturday a month for farm tours and an onsite worm composting class. Otherwise, local buyers simply prepay on my website and pick up on my porch.
As far as local business goes, my biggest advertising success has been with our local organic co-op and homeschooling groups. This is my target demographic: people who are interested in healthy food. Newspaper ads have done nothing for me and I even had a full page news release in a town of over 100,000 with NO results. And for me, fishermen here locally want to buy by the half pound(or smaller), which is not worth my time, so I do not market to them.
If you are considering starting a website, do not be tempted to go with a free site or some cheap site. I would be glad to talk websites more with you off forum.
I hope this helps, I don't have any "secrets", all I want is to get as many people interested in worm composting as possible for the health of future generations.
Liz
