Worm I D please.. 1 Year, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi Friends, It's Kay in Central Florida. Excuse me if you see a similar post. I lost one somewhere.
I was digging around my African Bin when all of a sudden a Blue worm with a pinkish head jumped out of the ground and was jumping and flipping all over! Is this an Alabama Jumper? It is stiff, shiny and blue. Thanks for the input.

Sounds like it may have been an India Blue. They look like a large version on an EF, but have a very pretty iridescent blue sheen and are very fast moving & temperamental. Great composting worms if you can keep them in the bin. They are known to just up and leave a bin for no apparent reason or when disturbed.

I haven't seen any of my African NCs (EEs) jump yet, but they can move pretty quickly when disturbed. EEs are hard to catch, but once you have them in your hand they tend to be pretty calm. I've heard the blues (P. excavatus) can also move very quickly to the point of jumping. By most accounts, both PEs and Jumpers will keep actively moving in your hand.

Colors can vary depending on lighting and whether the worm is wet or covered with debris, but I've usually heard Alabama Jumpers described as grayish. My EEs can have a blue/purple sheen to them under certain light. Photos of PEs that I've seen often show a very prominent blue head (above the clitellum). Here are 2 good collections of worm photos. Maybe you can recognize the worm you saw. JMO: it's tough to identify worm species by photos.
