Newbie Question on starting a business 3 Years, 3 Months ago Karma: 0
Ok, forgive me if this has been answered before, as I just found this website today.

I have a flower farm and am looking at beginning a worm farm alongside this business. Initially, to provide vermicompost and worm tea for my own farm, but then to (hopefully) expand and have additional income from selling the compost and tea. (I don't see a lot of fishing in my area and would rather not pursue that area).

Soooo....

Is there an established system that could provide enough compost/tea for a 2 acre farm on an ongoing basis and also provide a side income of say $1700+ per month? What would the initial investment be approximately? (I guess I am looking at some kind of continuous flow system, not just digging a hole in the ground and letting them go!).

Do to the time contraints of my other business, it needs to be as simple as possible. I'm not looking for get rich quick, but I also need to know if I am going to have to spend vast amounts of time and money for little return. If that is the case, I need to look at something else.

Has anyone here used any of the pre-made systems advertized by some verimiculture websites? What is the success rate and return? Who are the primary markets? How difficult is it to get and maintain steady sales?

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

I hope this will help you. I am starting a small vermicompost business to. I think the best worm system for you is the commercial OSCR. The smallest OSCR is 5' by 8' and cost about $5,000. There are 2 worm farms that sell commercial OSCRs that I found from searching. They both have websites. One company is Vermico and the other one is Yelm Worms. Both websites have lots of information. If I had the money I will the smallest OSCR bin or a Wig-Wam 5-6. Andy

I would look into buying used. Also you could set a bin system for a lot less.

you need to fiqure out how many sq ft you want to set up shop with , a rule of thumb is 1000 worms per sq ft so if you set up a 100 sq ft you would need 100,000 worms but those 100.000 would produce 1,000,000 worms over a years time creating a big revenue source for you 1lb worms = about a 1000 worms selling for 15.00 up to 25.00 now x that by 1000lbs =15,000 to 25.000 partime
then you have worm castings selling foe 40 cent a pound to over a buck a lb you will probably get 50 to 100 pounds every month or two then theres cocoons egg capsules they can go for 15.00 to 30.00 per 500 ,
this is a small scale , but with two acres you should be able to produce a nice income in a short while
can get you all the worms ya need let me know

When i checked out unco. They use buckets and stack them on a pallet. I am going to use this part of the system. This way you can save space and have better control. My opinion is that good record keeping is tantamount to having a great business.

Please keep asking questions.
