Wastebuster surface area query? 11 Months ago Karma: 0
I have seen on various web sites that the Waste Buster Maxi is advertised as being able to deal with waste from a family of 5-6 or 8kgs of waste per week.
I have also read in Mr George Pilkington's excellent book "Composting with worms" on Page 38 where he quotes Mary Appelhof, recommending "1 square foot of surface area for each 1 pound of waste per week"

I am confused since the Waste Buster Maxi is advertised as approx. 61cm x44cm x68cm (24"x 17"x27".

I am looking to purchase a Waste Buster to deal with approx. 10 pounds of kitchen waste per week along with an appropriate amount of shredded cardboard and whilst the Waste Buster Maxi seems to be OK I am concerned that it does not come near the Mary Appelhof recommendation for surface area.

Could you please advise with regard to this apparent anomaly?

Hi bobthebaptist; Was M Appelhof selling the Wastebuster? In order to dump 10# of waste per week that is ~1.5# per day of actual food. The bin size would be ~ 10 sq' 2' X 5'= 10 sq' with a minimum of 10# bio-mass of worms. the worms also consume the bedding material as food as it breaks down. I in fact would say to be safe it should be 30 or so sq feet so you can keep moving the feeding spot around and the hard to brake down materials (Corn cobs ie)have time to also brake down before being covered by the vermicast.

I've only gotten those kind of results from a fully functioning outdoor bin, 4' x 8' x 1', approx. 20 pounds of worms. 10 lbs. a week is a lot for any indoor bin.
