Banana Peels...High in insecticides? 2 Years, 3 Months ago Karma: 2
Never have heard anything against feeding banana peels to worms before, and I do it all the time. Just saw where one grower warns not to use them because they can contain high amounts of insecticides. Anybody ever have a problem with them?

I usually eat organic when ever I can, but I did have a big die off once when I put about 6 banana skins in the top layer of a can-o-worms. The worms were in the layer below, but they were still all dead the next day. For ages I couldn't figure out what it was, then I read about bananas

Cathd,

Have you been feeding peels since the die-off? maybe it's not a normal problem, but that bunch happened to have an excess amount that time. Did you hear about bananas on this thread or somewhere else earlier?

Score's 2 to 1 so far. Any other experiences with peels?

I have been feeding banana peels, but mainly organic. I agree it possibly was a batch particularly high in insecticides. It was about two years ago, and I googled banana and pesticide, and found loads of information- not related to worms, but lists of the compounds used. Not pretty reading. Anti worm products are used alot in banana production because they get stored to ripen them, and that can allow worms to hatch apparently, during transport. Can't rememebr exactly all the details, but there was also alot about the effect of pesticides on the plantation workers which was another reason I switched to organic and fair trade bananas.
