This is probably the weirdest question ever posted but here goes anyway.

I do all my fishing in US (MA) with my preferred bait of choice being Canadian Night Crawlers I purchase locally at a store.

Anyway I am travelling to Kerry in Ireland (where I am originally from) in April of this year and I want to bring in 36 => 48 Night Crawlers with me. I have a little thermos flask which is ideal for the purpose so no worries there.

You might ask why don’t I just buy them in Ireland; well the local variety are small and expensive like everything in Ireland anymore. But here’s the kicker I don’t think I am allowed by EEC law to bring soil into the country because of Foot and Mouth concerns. Strangely bring worms themselves in seem to be of no concern which is kind of funny. Anyway I am looking for advice on how to keep them in the flask without soil for the 6 =>7 hour period of time before
I can return them to soil in Ireland. Would they keep in a mixture of damp shredded news paper or sawdust or damp wooden shavings? Anyway I can certainly test the theory myself but I’d prefer not to waste my bait on experiments.

Hi nipper; Try Buss-Bedding, It is at some Wal-Mart sports departments. It's made of ground up paper and cardboard with food in it just dampen and its ready.

sound like your going to enjoy the trip .but have you thought about air for the worms?. By the time you get there the casting will look like soil

you could use the bedding you mention or shredded news print becarefull of what ever you use due to heating when compressed in a small space

Yes I think they will be OK for Air. I use the same thermos flask before without them dying so I think I am OK in this department. I'm going to keep them in soil just before the airport and return them to soil in quick order after I land. They need to only survive the environment in the undercarrage which won't be as hot as carry on anyway.
