 appropriate used containers? - 2005/11/04 17:43 I'm just getting started with worm bins, and I read in Permaculture magazine how to set one up using a reclaimed bucket from a food distributor. I've been unable to find such a container, but am looking for suggestions. I don't want to buy something new, because we try to utilize recycled and reclaimed items as much as possible, especially when it comes to plastic. Anyone have good ideas of places to find used buckets that are good for home vermicomposting?

 Re:appropriate used containers? - 2005/11/04 20:48 Ken..I agree completely with "using what you have". For me, that is what it is all about, making use of something, rather than making it trash.
I have made bins out of almost any kind of container. The best kind of plastic container (IMHO) is one not much more than 12" deep. Surface area is more important than height, as the worms in your bin are surface dwellers/feeders. The bin should be opaque, (not see through). Habitat for Humanity Reclaim Centers is a good place, but you should look around your house or neighborhood for free stuff. You do not mention where you are located but there is a website called "Freecycle" where people list items for "giveaway".. OR.. you are allowed "wanted" posts. (Great place!)

 Re:appropriate used containers? - 2006/02/21 09:08 look around new homes under construction drywall compound cones in 5 gallon pails wash them out drill some holes hot glue some flyscreen on the inside to cover the holes instant worm bin you can also look for kitty litter buckets.grease pails from fast food places you could even buy some plastic file boxes You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it
doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn’t move and does,
use the duct tape.

How about old bathtubs, large sinks, utility tubs and washtubs as containers. They have good drainage holes you cover with screen. You can even plant vegies or flowers in part of the bins.

The worms like it very dark so they can work on the surface, just as they would do in nature. Light to them means the sun and they do not want to be worm jerky. Susan Quinby-Honer
