Invasion - 2006/03/23 22:13 I have no idea about worms , so I am asking the help of anyone who may know what has happened on my front porch. After the first rain after a long dry spell in central texas - I had ball sacks of worms come up on my front porch. Each sack must have contained hundreds of red/brown 2-4 inch long worms, surrounded by white foam. Please see attached photos - and let me know what they are? Why the sacks? What can I do about them - they got into my house!

(Please check the middle of the Home Page story for a picture)

Re:Invasion - 2006/03/24 10:55 What are ball sacks?
Maybe your photo file was to big.
You need to reduce image size, and dpi's.
I reduce mine to 60 dpi's, and make photo approximetly 3 x 5 or 5 x 3, or something in that range.
When it rains here, I find wild worms in a varety of places. If I leave paper out, or empty dolomite lime sacks, I will find worms in them. If I leave a bucket out, I will find worms in them.
If you want, you can email me the photo, I can reduce it for you and send it back.
I use mesh bags my self in my worm bins, to aid in separating worms from the castings.

Re:Invasion - 2006/03/26 11:41 Hello Everyone,

It appears Ms. Harris's photos were too large to post on the forum. However, it also appears the Worm Digest administrator went the extra yard and posted the photos for all to see on the WD Home Page story in the middle of the page titled, "Invasion of Earthworms".

Wow! The pictures are interesting. I can see why there is interest in the story. I am not from Texas so I do not recognize the species. It seems that we are all in good company because the story states that Dr. Norman Arancon from Ohio State University did not recognize the species in the photos either.

Hopefully, some one will be able to recognize these little sacks and pontificate on the story behind them.

Re:Invasion - 2006/03/26 16:13 I took one of the pictures from the article, cropped it, and reduced it.
I have seen worms in my dried out planters in late summer in a similar state. They congregate and ball up, to keep each other moist. But I have never seen what looks like a web covering.

Re:Invasion - 2006/03/29 17:21 WOW!

I JUST SAW THE INVASION of the INCREDIBLE BALLS OF WORMS on the HOME PAGE!!!

Very cool that Dr. Norman Arancon looked at the pictures. It must have happened before in Texas somewhere because there's been flooding before, right?

Maybe Mo should submit the pictures to her local paper and see what they come up with...

Re:Invasion - 2006/03/31 11:48 WOW is right!

Those pictures are totally amazing! I have never seen anything like that before. I am curious too now to see what they are and why they do that. Does anyone know if this has happened anywhere else besides Texas? It would be cool to find that out too.
Did they just unwrap themselves? Maybe this was a sign they want you to invite them in for dinner (leftovers!)
Did you get them out of your house or are you still finding them?

Good luck on the quest!
