I am trying an experiment - 2006/05/07 11:26 I don't know if I would recogize a worm cocoon if I saw one

So this morning I when I checked on the worms I just gathered up some of what is in the bin, minus any worms of course and put it in a wide mouth glass jar. I cut the foot off an old pair of pantyhose and secured this over the top of the jar with a rubber band (don't want to find any surprises crawling across my desk in case I missed a worm). The jar is now sitting on top of my computer tower.

I'll just wait and see if any little wormlets appear after a while. If none appear I will know I just didn't get any cocoons in my collection as I have lots of healthy worms, so I know that wouldn't be the problem.

If some do start hatching out, this may be a fun thing for my grandsons to observe over the summer. Then I can just dump the hatchlings into my bins, or help them start one of their own if they want to.

Okay I have gone worm crazy I know, but there are worse places to go, right? Glenda

Re:I am trying an experiment - 2006/05/07 14:22 Glowery...Check out these images of cocoons. When they are first laid they are a light lemon color. As they get closer to hatching they turn a darker color, to almost burgandy. They are easier to spot as the lemon color. I sometimes find mine near the edges of the bin.

I agree with JT - the smaller the container, the quicker the temp (and moisture) fluctuations.
Bet you get some hatchlings; I gave up trying to pick cocoons out of my trays when I harvested last month

Those were awesome pictures of worm cocoons. It looked like some of those cocoons were stuck to a piece of cardboard, hmmmmm which gives me an idea.

Gary, I will heed the advice of making sure the light and mositure content of the jar stay a bit more consistant. I moved the jar from the top of the tower to a place inside the desk that would be dark most of the time.

I am not going to make it a habit to pick out cocoons, but I sure would like to see some in the bed just so I would know what they were
