Old food in worm bins - 2006/05/07 07:57 If there is food in worm bins for longer than a week that has not been consumed, should I leave it in the bin or remove it?

I had posted earlier about some course chopped potato peelings that I had added to the bin. Not all of this has been eaten. Is it okay to leave it the bins or should I take them out? I was asking because I wondered if the longer they were in there the more heat they may be causing in the bin.

I fluffed up the bedding in my bins just a couple of days ago and and sprinkled a bit of cornmeal on the top. Yesterday morning when I checked on the bins when the light hit them I noticed quite a bit of movement just under the shredded paper.

I could come to a couple of conclusions from this;

1. They really like the cornmeal, or;

2. They wanted to get away from the potato peelings.

Does anyone want to venture which conclusion may be closer to the truth?

Re:Old food in worm bins - 2006/05/07 11:05 They really like cornmeal..and it is more readily available as a food source. Potato peelings, if not cooked, are going to take a while to break down to the point that the worms can make use of it. Susan Quinby-Honer

Re:Old food in worm bins - 2006/05/07 11:16 I'll remember that before I feed that them the peelings again. I have some in the freezer now I had planned on using at a later date. I think I will run them through the food process and chop them really fine and then let them sit out for a copuple of days before I feed them.

Hmmmm maybe I could cook them in the oven for a bit before I run them through the processor. LOL I am always thinking of better ways to feed the stock. ha ha ha

Re:Old food in worm bins - 2006/05/07 22:25 Glenda - I always nuke dense raw stuff like tater peels before I add it to my 'future wormie-chow' crock. After a couple days in the crock, it blends right in .
BTW, we eat a lot of taters, and I've never seen my l'il fellas shy away from 'em in their feedstock.
Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.

Re:Old food in worm bins - 2006/05/08 06:58 Thanks for the tip Gary, I will remember that. They really liked the celery and carrots that I ran through the food processor, but those two things have a lot ot moisture in them naturally so this was really soft and wet when it went into the bin. The worms congregated to that area of the bin pretty quick when I put that in there for them. (Glenda makes mental note....finely chopped, soft and moisture=good for the worms )
