A question about worms - 2006/05/13 07:02 Hello this is my first visit to your forums,

My father who is a naturalist recieved a letter asking the following question,

I was in my garden a couple of weeks ago and saw what I can only describe as a skein of worms. they appeared to be dead, I left them thinking the seagulls would eat them but they left the alone. The skein was about 14 inches long and consisted of over 50 worms, can you tell me what the cause of this is ?

As neither of us now much about earthworms specifically
I thought I would try asking here (I apologize if this topic has come up before, I couldn't seen it in the archives)

Re:A question about worms - 2006/05/16 16:15 Hello,

No I don't think so (I should have clarified that I'm based in the UK where I don't think we get tent worms)

It's unfortunate that the lady who wrote the letter didn't supply a photograph, but from her previous correspondence I don't think that she would mistake caterpillars for worms.

Perhaps it was just some kind of freak occurence, but as I had never heard of a large number of worms being found dead in a group I thought it may have been something more specific that happened to them.

Best regards
