Chippers, Grinders, Shredder Question - 2006/06/12 10:03
I have a couple of small produce stands willing to donate their scrap fruits and veggies- I would like to find a quicker way to cut/chop/shred/grind this stuff up thats faster than by hand. I plan on letting it sit for awhile and decompose before using it for my worms. Any ideas, or suggestions? What do you use? I probably will have about the equivalent of a 10 gallon tote box of scraps to process each day. In the past I have used an old blender, put you have to add so much water to it- a slurry mess! Wife says no way with food processer! HELP! Thanks

For that ammount a small size chipper maybe? I'm not sure what one would cost, but doing that ammount by hand each day would be a job that would get old fast.

Hi, An old garbage disposal would work, salvage an old one, and set it up, and use a catch bucket to catch the ground waste, the down side is you would have to use water with it, if your bins drain well, that would be no problem. Or drain well before feeding, using the drain water in the garden or in the compost heap. If you adverstised for one, on your local freecycle.com you might get one.

I did the old garbage disposal way. I set it up with a screened strainer and do use the water for wetting bedding or any other yard use.

Tell me more about this garbage disposal set up... I've been mashing my food with a sledge hammer: pile it up hammer away, turn and repeat. If I do this between between sheets of newspaper in a big bucket it is not too bad. This is effective, but clunky and messy.
I looked into hooking a shredder up to a stationary bike, but couldn't generate enough torque to keep it from stalling when chopping fibrous stems of things like broccoli--even with a really heavy flywheel.
Susan: do you have pics of your set up? I'd like to try this.
Cheers,
Mark

I would too like to see this setup. I use one of those hand things to dice up peals, and all the food waste types. This is quite messy, and takes a while when you have alot to chop up.

How about using an old rotary mower put down a sheet of plywood set the blade low as possible and block the discharge shoot. Pile the veggies on board tip mower back on rear wheels roll up to the pile rev it up and then splat kind of like mowing the garden in the fall

Hi, My husband took a metal single sink set it in a frame he made, hooked up a garbage disposal and added a 1" or 1 1/2" PVC pipe to come up and chopped up food goes into a 1/2 barrel. The sink has a faucet so I can run water very slowly for the disposal. This sets outside near worm bins. MaryKay

Anyone else have any ideas if you don't have running water available to use the garbage disposal method? Thanks

I just use my food processor, but I don't have as many worm bins or beds as some of these fine folks have. I just have 2 bins now, but I will be going to three when I empty and divide my population.

I just use my food processor
For the worms I got this works best also. Hand chopping up the scraps I needed to was too much work.

Hi, I will get a picture of my disposal setup tomorrow and try to post it tomorrow night or Thursday. You can hook up a garden hose to the sink that's what I started with. I put a fan spinkler with a shut off valve on it so I could turn it off & on. MaryKay

Nice pic Kuznles. That looks like it breaks that paper down to where the worms will have no problem disposing of it right away.

Nice pics Kuznies- I had problems visiting your website with this web-tv thing. I liked the looks of your worm bins- any chance of getting more info and/or plans?

While I like the product, these are NOT cheap. Even used! Too pricey for me. I'm looking for more of a ...backyard special...

Re:Chippers, Grinders, Shredder Question - 2006/06/29 09:30
That will be one of those things to get later if my worms take off. Right now I'm just using mine to eat food wastes, and to have a constant food source for my fish to eat. If they reproduce like crazy, and really take off I could see getting one of those just for the fact it would cut down on time I spend now getting the food ready for them. It would get used around the yard for other things also... If I keep talking about it I will talk myself into it, so I better stop.

for a small home operation, what about just an old fashioned manual meat grinder?
