Re:ROACHES!!!! - 2006/05/18 22:36 I've been seeing a few in / around my outdoor bin the last few weeks also.
I don't think these are the 'house infestation' dudes. These guys are about half as wide as they are long (1"), and are dark reddish/brown. Quick little boogers too!
As long as they stay out there, no problem. Understand that they're part of the native fauna.
I'm a bit worried about using VC in the houseplants though if I may be bringing roach eggs in.

Re:ROACHES!!!! - 2006/05/19 11:37 memo...If your bins are outdoors then it's going to be a buffet for all the decomposers and it's not a problem. I agree with gnosnhoj.
Gary..If you are concerned about using the outdoor VC on indoor plants, just make tea out of it and make your plants very happy.

Re:ROACHES!!!! - 2006/05/19 15:20 Sue's probably right-- tea is probably OK, but I abide by a strict rule that everything that is outside stays outside and does not come in. Inside things can go outside, but once out these don't come back in. This prevents me from bringing in any unwanted organisms and contaminating my indoor bins.

The only exception to this rule (and it wouldn't be a rule without an exception!) is harvesting in the sunshine. Even that is something that I try to do with as little outside time as possible.

Re:ROACHES!!!! - 2006/05/19 19:14 Ahhh, yes, the pleasing demure of roaches. I know them well. They have taken up residence several times in my bin and I have worked myself into a frizz trying to find environmentally sensitive ways to encourage them to go elsewhere.

What seems to work fairly well, though not 100% successful all the time is to cover the bedding material very well with a more solid less appealing to the roaches material. I have been using composted horse manure, but dirt works fine too. I cover the bedding to about 1-2inches thick. That way no food scraps of any sort are accessable or protruding for roaches to reach. They don't stay where they can't eat. They are usually gone within a day, two at most. The idea is to have a material dense enough to keep the roaches out, yet let air in. I also moisten it. Worms so like it cozy and cool and moist Good luck.

Re:ROACHES!!!! - 2006/10/11 20:47 I dont like roaches and wonder if its not a problem from too much food waste.
I always bury my food waste as we have a problem with animals like coyotes, racoons, and possoms, so I dig a hole in my compost pile put in my food scraps and cover them back up good. That way raw food isnt siting on top of my compost pile for the bugs flies and animals to eat and get into.
it also cuts down on smells so i dont smell anything.
hope that helps.
