coffee grounds as food - 2006/10/13 13:49 I can get used coffee grounds from a cafe and used newspaper from the office. Is there a problem using coffee grounds along with shredded newspaper as the only source of food? I'd probably use other waste too, but the amount of grounds would make up the majority of the feed.

Also, any advice on how to tell the difference between vermicompost and coffee grounds? (Besides brewing up a cup and tasting it!) I can tell when other kitchen scraps have been digested, but coffee grounds are very similar in color and texture so I'm having difficulty telling if its been vermicomposted.

Re:coffee grounds as food - 2006/10/13 15:09 I think that coffee grounds alone would be too acidic to keep the worms happy.

Re:coffee grounds as food - 2006/10/13 19:24 Spent coffee grounds are pretty much neutral. I know people who do feed just grounds and paper. Worms love the grounds.
I opt for a more varied feedstock, as I have plenty of other organics that can be added to my bins

Re:coffee grounds as food - 2006/10/14 09:45 Claims in old fourms:

1) Organic matter over time tends to PH7.
2) EF worms in an 'open' system (worms have places to go) will avoid fresh raw sewage, yet if the worms are only able to eat raw sewage, they grow fat and happy.
3) People have made the claim that coffee grounds are their worm's favories.

Re:coffee grounds as food - 2006/10/18 15:31 Is coffee acidic but the spent grounds neutral?
We always find the need to fatten the worms up with cornmeal every so often. Does anyone know if there are some types of brewed tea that could be dangerous to earthworms?

Re:coffee grounds as food - 2006/10/18 15:48 oh yeah - the other thing the worms really seem to like every so often is ground limestone. It's neutral.
