I can't believe only 12 guessed the right answer in the poll so far. It's Beverly Praagh in Worm Digest's 1993 Issue #13, holding the GGE! First discovered in 1878 by a railworker in Australia, these worms liked to dive down under, about 5 feet under, and would retreat into recesses to keep from being pulled above ground. Giant Gippsland Earthworms (GGE) don't regenerate like their smaller cousins and can die when only part of their length is retrieved, according to author John C. Buckerfield. When the GGE retreats down its burrow, a large gurgling sound can be heard. They are believed to live for five years and won't procreate unless they have achieved close to 200 grams in weight. Only 1/2 a pound! Well, time for a new poll! Look for it soon.
