redworms and winter - 2005/12/11 14:43 I put 2lbs of redworms in my garden this summer/fall. It freezes here and we will get at least a couple of feet of snow here over the winter. I have a little bit of mulch on my garden, but not enough to keep the ground from freezing. Will they survive the cold winter and reappear in the spring? Does a redworm hibernate or go dormant or do they just die. Thanks in advance. Norm

Re:redworms and winter - 2005/12/11 16:12 I don't know where you are but in SC, my redworms lasted all winter last year.

Re:redworms and winter - 2005/12/11 21:24 Norm.. Where are you located? The more mulch, (leaves perhaps), you can put on the top of your pile, and addition of fresh food scraps buried beneath, the better chance your adult worms will have to survive. During freezing temps you may lose your adult worms. When the weather warms again, the cocoons will hatch and all would be good in the compost pile world again.. Susan Quinby-Honer

Re:redworms and winter - 2005/12/13 12:36 Norm..One more note..I have just added about 6 cups of grain, buried in a pocket, to each of my outdoor, in-ground bins. This dampened grain will act like a little furnace when buried. I have had my worms winter-over this way for 3 years now. Susan Quinby-Honer
