 grass clippings!!!! - 2008/03/22 21:35 My question to evryone. Are grass clippings ok to use If someone uses chemical fertilizer on their lawn.
My concern is a granular could be drawn into the clippings. Then our worms bin. Correct me if im wrong.

I am also looking from the standpoint of a consisitent casting.

 Re:grass clippings!!!! - 2008/03/23 20:22 I'm thinking that if a fertilizer, chemical or not, has been well-watered in, the cuttings from that patch oughtn't be much different than from an organic patch.
I'm just supposing here; I imagine some research on the matter is out there.
FWIW, I've used fertilized lawn cuttings in my bins without any apparent detriment, although I've never sent my vc off for content testing.
Maybe like with fresh manure, let it sit a few weeks before intro...? Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.

I dont think that the chemical fertilizer will be a big deal once it has sat. If it is a big deal for your herd, you will know right away. Escapees, mass migration, so on...

As for consistent castings... What goes in, is what comes out. If you know what you are adding, and how much, then you can know what you are getting. As long as what you are feeding them is the same, or at least the same make up (carbon:nitroge ratio, similiar paper types, same amounts, etc.) you should be confident that each harvest will be the same. Heck round here their spreading that crap evry other month.

Squirman i agree about the ratios. Im working on a percentage of coffee grounds to newspaper, peat moss...

What do you use and the percentages.

P.s. Im trying to get some spent brewery mash. we have several local micro brewerys. i also contacted a small bakery to see if they would part with some stale bread.

But we do feed our hatch bins old bread, old newspaper, corragated, coffee grounds, so on. But our main feed is a cocktail that my father-in-law made up, the Bush's Baked Bean family dog sold it to him!!! Dave Wallace
