 How much tea should I expect? - 2008/03/25 17:29 I set up my bin (similar to Can O Worms) the first of February with 2 lbs red wigglers. I had a problem with the adults dying off but there must of been a bunch of cocoons because now I have babies plus some adults.

How much tea should I expect to be collecting? There is just a little in the bottom (my 7 yr old's friend opened the spigot one day - I could've killed him!!!)

Should I leave it open all the time to drain? - it's outside in our pole barn.

 Re:How much tea should I expect? - 2008/03/25 18:08 Can't really tell you how much tea to expect, but I would guess that it is going to depend on what you are feeding them. If they are just getting moist newspaper, I dont think you would get as much tea as if they were getting left over lettuce, banana & apple peels, and so on.

Also keep the spigot closed. That way when you are ready to use the tea can put it right into your can or spray bottle and use it up. Dave Wallace

Bin leachate is not worm tea; it is the excess moisture from chow decomp and perhaps over-watering
Gary is correct. That leachate is just drainage.
There is a method for "brewing" worm tea that is full of aerobic, active microorganisms.
Also keep the spigot closed.
If you keep that spigot closed, I think all you will collect is stinky swamp water. Susan Quinby-Honer

The COW instructions tell you to leave it open with a collection jug under it and close it when you are emptying the leachate from the jug. Leachate is only good to put on /in a composting pile or bin because it stinks and does not directly help plants in the strength it comes from the drain. It will help jump start the composting with some microbes. larry
