beetles in bin? - 2008/04/24 10:14 Hi,

I've had my bin 8 weeks now and since recovering from the stinky bottom (thanks for the replies)...things have been going well. I have lots of healthy worms, cocoons and baby worms. I've seen white and brown mites, but not in excess.
I am now seeing black and brown very fast beetles for the first time. They're about 3/16th inch long and look like little VW Bugs. I've seen about 7 of them so far.
From what I've read, I only need to worry about centipedes and red mites bothering the worms themselves, but I'd still like to be reassured that these guys are okay in the bin.
Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences; it's been a huge help as I learn.

Re:beetles in bin? - 2008/04/24 17:15 Thanks for the welcome. Can't say that I know too many people who are interested in talking worms! I'm in Virginia Beach.

Re:beetles in bin? - 2008/04/24 22:10 Welcome, Cathy.
Yep, I host those little fellas too, and have never seen any detriment to the herd.
I think they're what are commonly called grain beetles, related if not identical to the little boogers that can sometimes be found in un-sealed flour, crackers, cereal etc.
I'd rather have 'em in the bin than the pantry, myself.
Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.

Re:beetles in bin? - 2008/04/25 16:48 Thanks Gary, you're right they're grain beetles. I googled them and my particular kind are warehouse beetles. I gave the bin some of the guinea pig litter that had spilled food; my guess is they came from there. At least I'd prefer to think that otherwise we're probably getting extra protein in our cornbread.
