Fighting Fruit Flies - 2008/04/15 17:00 My son -in-law told me that to kill fruit flies just leave out a bowl of water with Dawn dishsoap in it. So I tried it and have killed thousands. Yes, I have a terrible case of them.

you don't need very much soap just enough to break the surface tension, which wouldn't amount to more than a half a dozen drops. As for this scent, try a rotten fruit. I really don't think the odor matters. They go for the moisture they would normally land on the surface and drink however with the soap. There is no surface tension in the sink to the bottom and drowned You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it
doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn’t move and does,
use the duct tape.

Re:Fighting Fruit Flies - 2008/04/17 00:13 I use original scent. All I know is I have put juice and I have had water out and I have not gotten as many as I have with the Dawn dishsoap. I just squirt some in about a 4 cup bowl and they go right for it. I think it may be the soap dosn't let them get out of the bowl and they are stuck there. With the juice they could get out and fly away. With the dish soap there are so many the water turns cloudy with them.

Re:Fighting Fruit Flies - 2008/04/19 23:30 That same thing works with meat bees. You set it up the same way, you just add a small stick or skewer with a piece of hotdog, or any kind of meat pushed on to the skewer.

Make sure the meat is hanging just above the soapy water. Set the trap out away from where the cooking and eating will be done so the meat bees will have already found the trap before everyone starts eating or cooking. Later on you will find the bowl full of meat bees. The soapy water drowns them good.

I never heard of using it for fruit flies, but you can bet im gonna give it a try. Thanx for the tip!

Re:Fighting Fruit Flies - 2008/04/20 01:25 Found a really cool product the other day for ANY flying things . It is a small tennis racquet with a little twist . It takes 2 "D" batteries and has a control button on the handle . Quite simply you only need to touch the little bugs and keep the button pushed . The bugs are ZAPPED and stick to the screen until you take your finger off the button which would be right over where you want to dispose of them .So if you have fruit flies in a group swirling around in a small area (as they usually do) all one needs to do is to pass the racquet slowly across that area and they are dead Dead DEAD !!! if I add a little dish soap to theese do you think it will kill the fruit flies I sure do get tired of them things trying to fly up my nose .. my washer is out there to and I have noticed that if I dont wash out the lid from the detergent that the cup fills up with fruit flies if this works you are my HERO

fruit flies are one of my biggest peeves about this worm farming other than that I love it

Believe it or not we got one of those things as a wedding gift a couple of years ago! works great on mosquitoes.

Re:Fighting Fruit Flies - 2008/05/03 09:14 jvolpert, sounds like you're seeing some type of grain beetle. Fruit flys...fly. They look more like gnats and tend to buzz in & around a bin where they're finding a lot of chow and moisture. Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.
