Disturbing worms too often? - 2008/05/17 11:40 Hi, I was wondering if sticking ones hand around in the bin and "exploring" etc, has any detrimental effect on the reproduction or growth rate of the worms. I love to occasionally work my hand through the bin and see how the worms are growing and multiplying etc, but I am curious if it disturbs their breeding or cocoon development etc. Would it be better to leave things undisturbed as much as possible? Thanks, and I am enjoying reading the forum! Home Farming With Nature

Re:Disturbing worms too often? - 2008/05/17 13:30 Hi yardfarmer,

You are right on the money there. It is best to leave them alone as much as possible, but...it doesnt hurt to check around every so often. I try to keep it to about once a week or so if I am gonna mess around in their home. And I try to keep it to a small area. I dont use my hand as that might cause damage to some of the worms.

Since we have mostly outside bins that are 4x8x2, I use a pitchfork to lift the bedding in one spot to see if everything is goin ok. Sometimes I pierce a worm, but not very often. Also as you lift the bedding be careful not to stretch the wormies to far as this also damages them. Give them time to escape if you see you are stretching any.

Your doin fine
