Re:Vermicomposter's Map - 2008/05/20 10:34 Thanks Redhen,

I must say, I'm shocked to see so few Canadians on there! I'm in Ottawa, Ontario and it was really difficult to get worms when I started (one month ago). In fact, the closest farm is about 1 hour and 45 minutes from the city and only one store in town sells their worms. Believe it or not, the price for 1 lb of Red Wigglers is $60 from that store. If you make the drive out to the farm you can buy them for $45 per lb. From what I've been reading online, that's a LOT more expensive than in the states.

I suppose the colder temperatures makes it more expensive to raise worms up here.

Anyway, I've decided to start farming them here so that others won't encounter the same problems. We're starting with 17 lbs and hoping they'll multiply to about 500lbs by next spring. At that point we'll start selling them.

I'm assuming there will be a market for them, up here. We really don't know what to expect, but we'll keep you posted.

Re:Vermicomposter's Map - 2008/05/20 11:23 That's a good site Redhen. Great find!

Avidwormer, you'd be surprised at how many Canadian wormers there are. Not as many as in the States, but they're there. Once more folks know about the site, hopefully we'll see more Canadians on the map, including myself.

I started with a pound of EF's a little over 2 years ago (also paid around $40/Lb)and so far so good. Good Luck with your herd.

It's great to hear from a fellow wormer up here. I've been so fascinated with mine, since they arrived. I can't stop messing with the bins. It's only been one month but we've got lots and lots of large eggs in there. We've got all of them in the house, at the moment. With 17 lbs of worms I'd expect to smell something! But amazingly, we only smell the burlap (once per week when I moisten it). Such incredible creatures. I can't imagine why every home wouldn't want them.
