interesting story weeks after harvest - 2008/06/11 18:33 I sifted thru my castings today to see if I could save a few worms/eggs that I may have missed during original harvest. I was very surprised to take out 500 jeveniles and babies after only going thru 25% of castings.

It's unreal because I spent so much time during harvest to ensure that I didn't leave many behind. I used the pile and scrape off the top method. There must have been hundreds of eggs and some babies that were buried or camoflaged in the castings. Glad I took a second look as I want to start a second bin this fall. I can only guess at how many I will find in the next 75%.

Re:interesting story weeks after harvest - 2008/06/11 19:09 Yep, amazing how you can miss so many. My eyes get tired after awhile too.
Like Tom mentioned in Chana's 1st harvest...topic - if you put a few juicy fruit bits on top of your harvested vc, they'll come to you.
I do that a few times after harvest and it does work.
Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.

Re:interesting story weeks after harvest - 2008/06/12 09:55 The melon rind is a good idea and I will try it. When you're first starting out numbers are important in order to build the herd. There is no way to see the hundreds of eggs unless you spend days sorting thru the castings. During this rellk I will probably be looking at 2 pounds of worms by the time these babies and juvies mature.
