I forgot the answer - 2008/06/13 00:48 I seem to remember the question being asked "somewhere" and don't remember if it was answered and if it was what the answer was . The question was "Can you hook up a red light (like in a photographic dark room) and work with your worms without them realizing that they can be seen ?" Tom

Re:I forgot the answer - 2008/06/13 08:42 I haven't seen that post but I have heard people use red lights when harvesting them in their yards.
I think they are only sensitive to uv rays so a black light might work also. It just wont be as bright.

Re:I forgot the answer - 2008/06/13 19:09 Hey, Airborne - remember the old crook-neck flashlights with the red lens to stay discreet & preserve night vision?
I have a little LED strap-on headlight that switches from white to red (Energizer/WalMart/$12/3x AAA batteries) that I use when I play with the herd...among other things.
If a regular room light isn't on, after our traditional round of high-fives they go right back to what they were doing. Red light doesn't seem to bother 'em.

Re:I forgot the answer - 2008/06/15 12:55 I recall an article somewhere out on the WWW about setting up bin for education in class rooms. they described a black plastic enclosure(hefty sacks, PVC frame) with a red light inside to observe the worms habits without disturbing them from their normal routine.

I tried the flashlight idea a while back but am not coordinated enough. I get to poking asound with one hand and holding the light with the other and next thing you know I set the light down to dig with both hands and cannt see a thing.
