Fire Ants in worm bin - 2008/06/16 09:29 I live in Texas. A few months ago, I put my worms in a larger bin and then regretted it. Moved them back to their little hard foam bin, took out all those ravenous lava feeders and then put in new food that I had had aging. Went back yesterday, 2nd day and it had fire ants in the food and heaven knows where else, I was afraid to stir it up, just in case. I drowned it with water. Plan to go and check it out today and drown it again, if they are still there.
Anyone else have trouble with fire ants? If so, what do you do?

Re:Fire Ants in worm bin - 2008/06/16 21:32 Put the bed on top of something in a pan of oil and you will not have any ant problems. Water will work also but will evaporate and the next time you remember it will be when you see the ants again.

Re:Fire Ants in worm bin - 2008/06/17 19:07 Thank you very much for answer. It sounds so logical, you would think one would think of it... BUT, that just shows that experience is the best teacher, not necessarily logic. Thank you, thank you!

Re:Fire Ants in worm bin - 2008/06/17 23:57 Somehow I read/heard/or whatever that a band of vasiline (sp) around the bin will keep anything from crawling or otherwise getting up the sides . Mine are on bricks in a deep pan of water for that and to maintain a modicum of humidity in the bins . We average 10% or so in the summer . Tom
