Spelunking Worms? - 2008/06/30 10:22 Hi. I'm new to the forum and new to worms. I recently (3 weeks ago) purchased a "Worm Factory" bin system and put about 500 worms in the first bin. They seem to be doing well. But I've discovered that 10-20 worms have gone through the holes in bottom of the bin (which had 3 or 4 sheets of news paper covering it) and into the "reservoir". If I return them to the bin, I find another 10-20 back there the next day. Does anyone know why they are doing this? Are they moving back and forth between the bin and the reservoir, or are they there to stay? Are they trying to tell me something?

Thanks.

Re:Spelunking Worms? - 2008/06/30 17:35 Welcome to worm herding.
A lot of times when you start a new bin they will try to migrate/stampeede out. leave a light on for a day or two so they'll want to stay in the dark bedding.

But just in case how are conditions inside the bin? Not to dry, not to wet, food?

Re:Spelunking Worms? - 2008/06/30 22:10 Thanks AK. I have kept the light on but these guys are going out through the bottom into the reservoir where its closed in and dark.

I think conditions in the bin are okay. I've been checking the moisture and there's some food, not too much.

I guess I wouldn't worry if I knew they were going back into the bin.

Re:Spelunking Worms? - 2008/06/30 22:29 Welcome to the vermi world, JBot.
BLUF: worms in a WF will end up snorkling in the drain tray.
Add some dry shred paper down there and move 'em on uptown when you find 'em. When you get the hang of the system, you oughtn't have anything besides damp paper down there.
Somewhere back in this forum a few pages is a topic about all the fun I had with my WF, with a lot of observations and recommendations from forum members. Dang on me for not remembering what I named it. Anybody got the link?

Edit #1:
Aha! If you plug a username into "search", you get a list of posts:

Cool, huh?

Edit #2:
But, that long honking url makes the screen cut off the right side of the viewable post again.
Little help, Mod?

Edit #3:
Mods must have the holiday week off. I entered a space after "option" in the URL...

Re:Spelunking Worms? - 2008/07/01 14:03 Thanks Gary. That sounds like a good idea. From what I've seen on other posts, the drain is not very useful for "worm tea" anyway

Right. If you get any drips, it ain't tea, it is excess chow decomp fluids and too much water.
