Brown Food Eaten? - 2008/08/07 10:49 My worms get a diet of mostly coffee grounds. Brown. When I add other foods with the coffee and mix everything together while staging it for the bin, that other food turns the same brown color of the grounds. The top of my bedding is mostly that same brown, as well.

So the question arises: When I go to add new food to the top of my bedding, how can I tell if my little ones have already eaten through what I left them before?

I'm really careful not to feed them too much. But it seems like I'm not feeding them as much as I could be -- that is, using up more of my food scraps -- all for not seeing for sure what's there left over from before, and what's not.

Someone here have a tip for me? Thanks so much.

Re:Brown Food Eaten? - 2008/08/08 02:22 I dig a small hole and bury the food. place a plastic spoon in it so I don't forget where I put it last. when I think its time to feed again I gently uncover were I last fed. If there is a big ball of worms still going crazy there I cover it back up and wait another couple of days.

Burying the food really helped me cut down on fruit flies too.

Don't mix the coffee grounds with the food you have. Seperate them out so you know what the food looks like. When it disappears, then its time to add more food.

I think Wells is answering your question, he is a very helpful on these boards and well respected by the regulars. His answer is spot on, if you can touch the bedding and it still feels like food and coffee (smells that way too) then they are not finished (or not eating it) Too much coffee grounds can be bad so be sure to give them a balanced diet.

I dig a small hole and bury the food.

If you bury food, make sure the worms have enough room to escpae if the area heats up from hot composting... that could ruin your day.

To avoid fruit flys, you could lay you food on top then cover it with heavy newspaper (damp). I have found that keeps the flys at bay and helps keep the bed moist (especially on the warm days.

Re:Brown Food Eaten? - 2008/08/08 12:53 My reply was not intended as a joke .perhaps you need to ask better questions. serously how else would determine if the coffee grounds were eaten or not texture is the only way i know. FEED IT TO THE WORMS
