Worm Disease - 2008/11/13 19:33 Just ordered several pounds of worms from a farmer near here. The worms looked okay, at first, but now they're all dying.

I placed them in the same type of bedding as all my other worms (moist coconut coir and shredded newspaper) and have them at the right temperature etc. But the worms are looking all bubbly and twisted. Some are on their way to dying (with lumpy twisted bodies) while others are lying in the newspaper dead (and falling apart). I've attached a photo of one to show the white bubbles coming out of the worms.

Is this some kind of disease or would this be protein poisoning? The farm held off my shipment, initially, and indicated that their worms weren't looking so great. They told me they wanted to fatten them up a bit before sending them. Perhaps they fed them too much fatty food and that's causing them to bubble up like this. Anyone seen this before? Thankfully I didn't stick them in with my other worms. If it's some kind of disease, I hope it doesn't spread.

Re:Worm Disease - 2008/11/14 13:03 First thing..contact the grower.
Worms don't really get disease. That looks like some kind of "protein poisoning". Could be from the "fattening up" process.
You might try to rescue some of the worms that look okay, but my guess would be that they will all be history soon.
I would put the whole mess in an outdoor compost area and have the grower send you a new shipment of healthy worms.

Re:Worm Disease - 2008/11/16 03:19 Its possible the bubbling is all due to a new diet.
If it is down to a new diet then things may settle down in time, just give them plenty of shredded paper with any waste you give them.

Re:Worm Disease - 2008/11/17 12:54 I'm with Red Hen on this. Looks like a really bad case of Protein Poisoning. I'm betting the grower used a high percentage of grain to fatten up the worms and it soured in the bed. You can try to salvage the rest of the worms by putting them in a container of fresh bedding with no food added and see what happens. But do make sure you go back to the grower and let him know what happened and get a replacement shipment. We Are WORM - Resistance Is Futile!

Re:Worm Disease - 2008/11/18 11:20 Thanks to all of you for your feedback. I scraped the shredded newspaper layer off the bins (since that's where most of the dead guys were) and threw it into my outdoor compost heap. It was one smelly job!! That's for sure!

Then I added new newspaper to the tops of my bins. A few more dead guys have shown up (enough to pick out individually). But the rest of the worms seem to be happy and thriving. I've got some pumpkin ready for them, but I'll take your advice and give them a few more days without food, just to let them settle.

Thankfully it looks like I've salvaged most of the herd. This was a 30 lb order so that was gonna to hurt.

Re:Worm Disease - 2008/11/18 14:53 If you haven't yet, you should notify the grower and get a partial replacement. e mail a photo too. If this isn't an isolated case and other buyers are having a similar problem, I'm sure the seller would want to know.
