are my worms happy? - 2009/04/10 13:57 Hi, I am a real newbie. I just rcvd my first 1000 worms 2 days ago. Their new home is a rubbermaid container w/plenty of ventilation holes (top/bottom/sides). The bedding consists of damp newspaper(like a wrung out sponge), 7" deep. I placed the worms on top and then covered them with a layer of moist newspaper. When I checked on them the following morning about 20 of them were on the lid. I put them back under the newspaper. This morning there were about 10 of them on the lid again. Should I be concerned that they aren't all descending? I was going to feed them some vegetable scraps today. Is it too early?
Thanks

Re:are my worms happy? - 2009/04/10 17:42 When you raise the lid is there condensation on the sides and lid? If so, your wrung out sponge may need more wringing out. When I used plastic bins in the past, I found by lining the insides with sheets of cardboard helped. I never really got to liking the plastic bins though many do use them successfully.

Not odd for worms to crawl in a new setting. Wouldn't start out with a lot of feed.

Re:are my worms happy? - 2009/04/10 19:29 Hi!
No there is no condensation at all. this evening there were only 2 worms on the lid. I fed them, I hope not too much. Should I check it in a couple of days to make sure that they have eaten it all?
Thanks Gabby

Re:are my worms happy? - 2009/04/10 19:58 Good, not too wet then, probably just getting settled in. Yes you should monitor food intake and ideally get to where you are feeding no more daily than they will consume in a day. This will keep odor, excess moisture and pests to a minimum. If possible, a regular feeding schedule. Sprinkle a little pulverized garden limestone or egg shells now and then. Watch your shredded paper doesn't become compacted and some shredded cardboard or composted soft wood chips mixed in can help with that. Some sand for their gullet and they should be happy Arkie's Vermiculture

imho there should be readily digestable food in the bin when the worms are added even if it is only a small amount i use pureed pumpkin, 2 TBL spoons in each new bin this gets them going fast they don't eat the veggies directly to the worms rotton is editable
