Need Help To Identify - 2009/04/05 11:02 I just got an order of red wiggler worms and there are a lot of these in there. They have a sheen like the Perionyx Excavatus but they are not dark blue or purple in color. More like a gray.

Re:Need Help To Identify - 2009/04/05 17:19 I am not sure, but I have heard several stories recently of this happening, ordering red wigglers and getting a mix.....

I have heard of that mix beeing a Gerogia Jumper but that is just what I heard and not first hand.

Re:Need Help To Identify - 2009/04/06 07:45 They look like the manure worms found locally. Are they very active and break apart easily? FEED IT TO THE WORMS

Re:Need Help To Identify - 2009/04/06 09:09 Thanks Swimmus and Jerry for your quick replies.

I've tried to find pictures of the Georgia and/or Alabama Jumpers but can't seem to locate one.

It would make sense to me that some kind of manure worm has gotten mixed in, if the farmer feeds the worms manure.

These guys are VERY active. When I tried to place one in a cup it jumped about a foot into the air three times (landing back in the cup each time). My husband was standing beside me and we were both shocked at the height that this worm reached.

I'm not sure if they come apart easily but they definitely feel different than the wigglers. These grey worms are more cylindrical and firm. A bit firmer than spaghetti al dente.

Re:Need Help To Identify - 2009/04/07 07:28 I agree. These guys aren't blue or purple in color. More grayish. They're also a fair bit bigger that PE. Just the sheen is similar. They also stay put in the bin.

I'm wondering if they'll pose any issues aside from compromising the purity of my herd.

I'm very happy with my supplier and this is the first time this has happened. I'm sure they were not aware of the mix.

I'm going through and picking out the wigglers and adding them to a new bin. I'll let the cocoons hatch in quarantine. Then go through and pick the wigglers out of that group when they're a bit older.

I see hours of worm picking in my future.

Try going to Best Buy Worms. They sell and have pics of Georgia Jumpers. They call them Hybrid Wigglers. Don't think it's them, but you can check. Might be African Nightcrawlers.

Re:Need Help To Identify - 2009/04/09 07:26 Is there any way you could send a dozen or so worm/eggs to me.I would think a plastic shipping envelope with wet news print would make it faster than a package they might crawl into a piece of corrigated card board.

Re:Need Help To Identify - 2009/04/11 21:30 Thanks Buddy and Jerry,

It's a bit difficult to see the Best Buy worms in much detail. But these guys do jump so the name would suit them, at least.

I don't think I can ship them to the US. I'm not really familiar with all of the paperwork involved in cross boarder shipping of worms. I'm also not sure which cocoons are from which worms. I guess that's what happens when you have a big family.
