Question about white mites - 2009/05/23 17:07 I started 3 bins over 3 months ago. All seemed to be going well till this week. I was away for 10 days and when I came home and looked in the bins and poked around there wern't many worms. My guess is that over 2/3 of the worms are gone. There are worms left but the the density is way down in all 3 bins. All the bins do have small white specs that move around. I guess they are white mites. I have read that they will not hurt the worms but something has.
Could the mites be the problem with the population decrease?

Re:Question about white mites - 2009/05/25 22:41 I doubt it, the population of white mite would have to be very high. That would keep the worms from feeding on top driving them down into the bed. The white mites attack dead or dying worms.

Did your worms escape or die?

Re:Question about white mites - 2009/05/26 13:48 Thw worms must have died. I was gone 10 days and the herd was desimated. I did not actually see any on the floor but they were gone. The few that are left in the bins seem to be healthy. I did get two shipments of worms from a large advertiser on the internet that were almost dead on arrival. The other 3 lbs were from a local worm farm. The common thread is the almost dead worms and some dehydrated bagged cow manure I used in all 3 bins bedding. Perhaps it was the cow poop I really don't know but it is very frustrating. Tom

Did you rehydrate the manure before you used it?

White mites come with raising wormsif kept in check they help break down the food so the worms can more readily eat it
FEED IT TO THE WORMS
