The hardest thing about worm composting... - 2008/11/03 12:25 ...is leaving them alone. I can't be the only person who likes to prod around in the bin. Or do you eventually learn to leave then alone?

Re:The hardest thing about worm composting... - 2008/11/03 12:50 I'd have to agree! I wanna see what they're doing, where they are, how fast they're eating, what they like to eat best, etc... John

Re:The hardest thing about worm composting... - 2008/11/04 08:09 Yeah, that's a problem all right. When I first started, I wanted to dig down in the bedding, checking on the critters and everything else. Then I found I had a real problem with my bin overheating, because of all the stirring I was doing. Like stirring a hot compost pile to keep it as active as possible. With the well-being and livelihood of the herd at risk, that was a real no-no!

Now I sit on my hands, deliberately walking "by faith, not by sight." And restricting my observations to what's going on on the bin surface.

Yep, best way is to play with different foods on the surface and peak under them to see what they're doing. Interesting how a piece of melon rind becomes just a skin after a while and the worms underneath are solid. I even put a couple of cheetos on my beds today

That was the hardest thing for me to stop!

After a few years though you will be able to look at the bedding and tell right away how things are doing. You wont need to dig around checking them out LOL.

Re:The hardest thing about worm composting... - 2008/11/07 23:56 Another thought is having several bins. Maybe 6-7, so you can play in one every day and not be bothering one bin but once a week! LOL John

Re:The hardest thing about worm composting... - 2009/09/19 15:28 I totaly agree! I always look at it and can't resist taking a peek at them. If they could only talk they will probably be nagging me everytime they see my face. lol
