Crop Protectant - 2007/02/18 12:29
Hello everyone,
This crop protectant product has had some good press and it supposedly will not hurt the earthworms. . . This may be a nice alternative than dumping “toxic” chemicals on your crops. I thouht I would share what I found. The companys says. . .
“Surround at Home Crop Protectant is a remarkable organic product that repels insects by creating a white protective barrier on vegetables and fruit trees. It’s a real boon to both commercial and home growers because it: Does not rely on “toxicity” instead, it protects plants with a barrier film and it
1) is listed for use in organic production 2) is the best organic product available to fight hard-to-control pear psylla, plum curculio and Japanese beetles 3) does not affect honeybees, earthworms or beneficial insects 4) reduces sunburn damage, resulting in higher yield
Just as you wouldn’t like to crawl into a bed full of gritty sand, insects don’t like crawling on a plant or tree covered with Surround.
How Does It Work?
Surround dries to a powdery film that sticks to insects’ wings, legs and mouth parts, so pests quickly leave to find a more comfortable place to feed or lay eggs. Its active ingredient is a specially processed, super-fine kaolin (allowed up to 2.5% in foods.) As an extra benefit, Surround blocks light that causes sunburn, reducing damage by over 50%.”
