Castings and Reproduction Question - 2006/08/18 00:07 Okay,I'm just trying to learn some here,so I can plan the next couple years out.(AT least an initial plan )

How many Pounds of Castings would you guys say:

500,000 RedWorms would produce each 3 months(or 4 if you think thats more accurate)assuming there being kept indoors under quality conditions and being fed quality feedstock.

Also being practical and not using extreme circumstances how long do you feel it would take to get to 500K of em if you started out with 10 thousand and there are no major bumps in the road

If I need to add more details to my questions just let me know and I will.

Re:Castings and Reproduction Question - 2006/10/11 20:04 Personally I cant tell you but I would think this is just to specific of a question to be able to answer.
It depends on to many variables.
Temperature would be the biggest in my opnion.
what you are feeding the worms would matter
what types of worms are they
etcetc
you get the idea lots of variables involved.
i know you are saying quality conditions indoors but still so many variables its hard to say.
the best way to find out is do it and see what your particular situation provides. Thats how many farmers learn. We can say that ideally 1 acre of land should produce a certain ammount of pounds of cotton or so many bushels of corn but it depends on temp, soil, fertilizer, pest, rain or drought, etcetc you get the idea.
wish i could help.
good luck

Re:Castings and Reproduction Question - 2007/05/25 14:53 Just an educated guess if you are using red wigglers they should produce 1/4 their weight in castings a day and population of breeders should double every 60 days until you make a newbie mistake and kill most of them because you didn't start out small and learn the system. If all you wont to do is produce castings the worm called PEs or petro ectravanious or something like that will produce more worms and castings but why limit yourself to just castings? I like the reds myself.
