Worm give away to benefit Hurricane victims - 2005/10/11 13:51Hello Worm Digest Forum,
I recently graduated from Penn State with a master of science in Soil Science. My research project was on vermicomposting. I had 6 continuous flow reactors going at one time processing both food waste and dairy manure. I'm now working for the University as a research assistant and need to find homes for these little critters that worked so hard to allow me to get my degree. I have set up a link on my website at Penn State that explains how you can help the Hurricane victims by giving these worms and bags of vermicompost a home. The link is:
Unfortunately, I can't do any mailing of the worms or compost, so you will have to be close to the State College, PA area to obtain. Sorry about that. If you check out the link, it should give you all the necessary information. If you have any questions, feel free to email me dmather@psu.edu.
Thanks to any and all that can help. And keep up the great work with this site! Nice job!
Sincerely, Drew Mather

Re:Worm give away to benefit Hurricane victims - 2005/10/11 18:37Hi, Great Idea Is it possible for us to donate the payment for the compost or worms and then have it delivered to your local community gardens or schools. Since I don't live within driving distance but wanted to donate my money and the product. Just Wondering??? MaryKay
PS I would like to know about your vermicomposting research project. How big were your continuous flow reactors?www.wonderworms.com Organic recycling not only improves our soil but our lives as well.

Re:Worm give away to benefit Hurricane victims - 2005/10/11 20:06Hi Mary Kay,
Thanks for your interest and thank you for that offer. That is most generous and I'd be more than happy to do that. We have a community garden project here that my wife and I are a part of, so I'd be most grateful to donate as many bags as you'd like to them. If you could let me know how many you'd like to donate I will go ahead and do that for you. Again, thanks for that offer and great idea.
As for my research project, the CFRs were 3'x4'x2.5'. My study was looking at organic material transformations that occur during vermicomposting in these CFRs. I looked at a number of chemical, biological, and spectroscopic properties of the developing and finished vermicompost at two different levels in these CFRs. Keep checking back to my website. I hope to have my results up soon. I am also working on a manuscript to submit to a peer reviewed journal so as soon as I have that completed I will post that to my site.
Many thanks for your interest and willingness to help those in need down in the Gulf Region.
Cheers, Drew

Thanks for agreeing! I will be checking your website as well. I heard you were available when we called. Looking forward to what's in store for the future. Re:Worm give away to benefit Hurricane victims - 2005/11/07 14:52Hello all,
I would like to thank all of you for your support of my compost and earthworm give away. I have been able to raise close to $300 for the hurricane victims down in the gulf region thanks to your efforts. I still have some bags of compost left if anyone is in Happy Valley and would like some.
As promised, I wanted to send a link to my thesis results from Penn State. I finally got them up this past weekend.
If you click the "Reseach" link on the left side of the page you will go directly to my research results from the project. There is an abstract available as well as the entire thesis for download as a PDF.
Please feel free to email me with any questions you might have. I love to discuss any and all things worm related
Cheers, Drew
