History Channel Fertilizer Show - 2007/06/20 22:59Hello all,
Did anyone see the Modern Marvels History Channel television show tonight on fertilizers?

Re:History Channel Fertilizer Show - 2007/07/11 16:39It will be on again this Saturday (July 14th) at 7:00 pm.
If you look closely during the portion highlighting "Vermicomposting" you will see me (look quick because I am only in the segment for a sum total of about 1.5 seconds - Im wearing a blue rain jacket and shoveling compost). Am I aloud to brag about this here? At least now my parents are proud of what I do (as dad says "must be legit if he is on TV")
They did the piece on our facility in April of this year. There was a ton of footage I wished they would have used and some really good interviews that were left out - but that is the media for you. Overall they did a good job and were a pleasure to work with.
Try to catch the rerun this week if you get time.

I must say it was a pleasure meeting you Tom. I wonder if you can get that extra footage from the Modern Marvels people... Saw a bit about Worm Power in the Livingston Newspaper last week. A successful enterprise of your size will be good not just for New York, but for everyone!

We do not have a copy of the rest of the footage that they didnt air (which was very good stuff) since the Modern Marvel people now own all rights to the remainder of the film and audio (we basically had to sign our lives away prior to them filming).
The piece in the Livingston Newspaper was well written. The day it came out we had about 75 people at our facility for a County Tourism Grant Program kick-off event - good publicity (local government and state government people). It was all good and everyone got to see the worms (ohhhh ahhhh).

Have you been back to work yet?
Jerry can you be re-word your question for the engineers and scientists out there? Do you mean casting material vs. manure as a fertilizer or plant food?

If you are looking for written literature on dairy manure and vermicomposting - I will dig around to see what I have - or if you want I can provide you with some basic ratios we are using in blending the compost we feed to our worms and the type of worms we are using.

Right now (summer) our mixing recipe is about 80% dairy manure and about 20% off-spec silage (hay silage is our bulking agent). The dairy manure is dry manure that has been put through a separator (so as to removal of a portion of the liquid). Now this does change for us seasonally depending on the temp and moisture. Since we are located in western NY we get huge seasonal variances during the year and have had to build this into our composting methods and recipes. We pre-compost (static aerated piles). these materials prior to feeding it to our worm population The worms love it.

It dried by the time I got it and now that it was mixed in the bedding the urine has killed some of my stock. MORAL let manure you feed the worms sit outside for a while the rain will the urine out
