Good Paper Shredder - 2008/05/26 22:28 I've burned out two paper shredders since I started shredding newspaper for the worms. I decided to buy a large commercial machine, but when I went through the instruction booklet it said not to shred newspaper in the machine. I'm guessing newspaper causes some issues with clogging the system in newsprint dust.

Can anyone recommend a shredder (or some other method of shredding newspaper) that is both efficient and effective. I'm hoping to find a solution that won't cost me a shredder per month.

Re:Good Paper Shredder - 2008/06/10 15:47 I've got a SCS6 Achiever that does a good job.

I've had it a few years and it's a workhorse.

Re:Good Paper Shredder - 2008/06/10 23:18 A shredder will last quite a while if you don't overload it . If you sit down to shred 15 pounds of newspaper you will have problems . We get a small paper here in Kingman . If I sit down and shred once a week it's not going to hurt it . One thing I do is I rip the pages about 6 inches wide by hand .Then I tear those in 10 inch strips . I then feed them through the machine sideways from the first tear . This gives me many shorter (6 inch) strips which (for me) are easier to control . The cardboard from cereal boxes , pizza boxes and just plain boxes get ripped by hand into pieces about 2 inches by 2 inches and put into the bag with the newspaper until a new bin is needed . As a matter of fact when I shred and tear I put them in plastic garbage bags with each having 4 pounds in them . Since I use 10 gallon bins that is the measure I need .I can then drill the holes needed in the bin , put screening over the holes , put something solid in the bottom (scrap plastic lattice) with a piece of close fitting cardboard on top of that and wet paper for bedding . By having the shredded paper ready I was able to avert a disaster when I realized that I had flooded one bin . I had dry shredded paper to mix in and absorb the excess water . Tom

Re:Good Paper Shredder - 2008/07/07 21:25 Avidwormer, I,m not sure how much paper you need, I use a hammer mill hooked up to my 9n Ford tractor Produces paper that looks like blown in insulation. I usually make about 200 to 250 lbs. of paper at a time, and put it in feed bags til it goes in to the mixer. The hammer mill I use was msde back in the late 40's by "Gehl".
