WormDigest Forum

New Environmental Forum - 2005/09/17 17:45 Please understand that I want to express my best wishes to all of the people who made this website possible. I have been searching for a forum that ties in environmental impact with earthworm considerations.

I farm potatoes and I think it is high time we humans look at environmental issues that effect the world around us.

Thank you Worm Digest for taking these issues to another level. I will be looking forward to interesting environmental conversation in this forum in the near future.

Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/09/17 20:02 Dear Tater -
Hoping the same as yourself. I'm continually surprised by the new applications forwarded for vermicomposts and teas. Let's see what comes from the chat. Best wishes on the crop

Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/09/18 14:46 Ms. Sexy Tater and Alfred,

After what just happened down in New Orleans, I cannot think of better timing for an environmental forum. Things are obviously changing in our world. The environment is probably one of the most neglected issues of the current administration in charge in Washington.

I do not want to come off political and I do not have a political agenda. So, I will also add that I understand that the current administration believes that there are other issues which they feel are more important to pursue. So with that said, whether they are right or wrong, time will tell.

However, sooner or later someone in Washington will have to step up and address specific environmental issues that have been simmering for sometime before it is too late.

I am looking forward to discussion in this forum concerning specific issues that have obviously been neglected and hopefully together, we can pursue the answers.

Oh yeah, and I almost forgot. This forum is also pretty cool.

Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/09/20 13:43 Hey Corn Meal!

This is a COOL SITE and you are correct. Environmental issues are all over the news everyday. Earthworms are related to environmentall issues more than people believe. In due time, I think this environmental forum will prove that fact to be true.

I read where Dr. John Tharakan, the Chair of the Chemical Engineering Department from Howard University, is involved with this new Worm Digest organization. He has published a technical paper utilizing earthworms in bioremediation. I think Dr. Tharakan is on to something big.

I am going to look forward to reading this environmental forum everyday.

Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/09/20 15:50 Jean,

I am with you all the way. There is another guy by the name of Dr. Jeff Tomberlin from Texas A&M University that is also connected with this new Worm Digest website.

He has done some interesting research with black soldier fly larvae. I am looking forward to reading his work.

Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/09/20 16:14 Yo!

i'm sittin' here wonderin' how in the world we haven't figured out the impact of the worm as a solid, environmental way to handle our soil...and then i'm sittin' here thinkin' - whoa! how cool is that we're seeing how solid worms are to make an environmental way to handle our soil

tharakan's workin' on worm bioremediation and then a & m is doin' black soldier flies...this place could be part of the way to the better world we've all expected...want to know more about both these guys!

Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/09/23 01:29 You guys are correct about Dr. Tharakan and Dr. Tomberlin. I am at this time woring on some very large projects with both of them.

One request I have of all of you is that you get a real name. I usually do not reply to someone that does not have a name.

Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/09/23 11:44 Hello Jerry,

It is nice hearing from you. These forums certainly appear to be alive with new blood. I am sure once the word gets out about this new website many of the old posters will return.

I think many of the posters are using either their real names or their username nicknames. I am amazed at all the nice people.

Either way, there already has been a substantial interest to these forums and I see it only getting better.

Take care old buddy. I'll be looking forward to your comments in the future.

Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/09/24 05:10 Hello, everyone. You guys have done a great job with the forum! Another step into a new dimension...I do agree with Jerry, I'd much rather visit with folks who have a 'real' name rather than a pseudonym, however. looking forward to visiting here every day. Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/09/24 13:56 Hello Bob,

It is great to see your first post. You are most respected. I have to admit I am a big fan of yours. I used to read all of your posts on the old forum. If anyone is ever interested, the good folks that put this new website together preserved all of Bob's past posts.

All you have to do is click on Archived Old Site under the Main Menu and click Old Forum. The dialog box that comes up on the top left side is for referencing the Old Forum. Type in Bob Ingram and all of Bob's posts are displayed. Isn't new technology wonderful.

I also really like the idea of the way the new forums on this new website are seperated. It will be faster and easier to follow posts in specific areas of interest. Just like anything new, it may take a some time to get used to, but in the long run I think it will be better.

Thank you Bob and Jerry for your great effort with this website. We all appreciate it. You guys are great.

Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/09/24 21:40 Hello Everyone,

I'm so very happy to join this particular forum. In my discussions with people I know or I meet, I try to mention environmental issues. There is a lot that needs to be done about our environment in so many ways. It will be quite interesting and exciting to see how this forum develops.

I'm having fun exploring this new website.

Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/10/16 12:45 Hi Jerry and those reading the forum,
I think it's great that there is work being done on PCB's' eradication, using earthworms.
Did you see the new article that says earthworm burrows can help pollution spread? How do you make the worms eat PCB's I wonder.
I am amazed at the amount of information this website is offering.
Did anyone read The Organic Gardening article out of Los Angeles-- saying that 4 1/2 million are trying to grow organic and that 80 million Americans are gardeners or landscapers??? WOW! The same article said how tomatoes that already taste better when homegrown are tons better when grown with the addition of worm castings.
Has anyone done their own garden experiments with worm castings?
Even if you don't care about the environment or saving the earth from more landfills and toxic waste dumps, you have to love the possibilities of improving your own yard or garden.
Even if you don't care about roses or tomatoes, you could get real interested in the huge market out there...

Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/10/17 20:59 I tell everybody who will listen that since I started using worm castings on my roses, I've not had any problems with aphids or whitefly. (Of course, I do a lot of other organic techniques to address this, including planting flowers to lure predators.) Last I heard, the preliminary research said that there may be something to this notion that sucking insects find something distasteful in plants that have been fed worm castings.

Certainly can't hurt...

Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/10/19 14:04 yes glad to hear.
Where did you find someone to do the testing. Last year with the abc science groups where i mentor students .
we were going to do that study but could not find anyone that could test the material in canada. So we ended up with these studies it was quite disapointing not to be able to carry on after we had got the school here to give us the pcp material to work with.
But still enjoyed the projects we did anyway.
So if anyone knows of a lab that can test for a decent price we still have the material to play around with. The science projects start in November

Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/10/19 17:35 Were you testing for PCB's or PCP's?

Most any of these studies have to be done through a University. When the study is complete they can write a non biased report.

Besides the PCB's we are currently working with Texas A&M on Black Soldier Fly Production to produce Fish and Poultry feed, extremely high quality plant food, and bio-diesel. We are also making a New Generation liquid fish, unlike any on the market today. It has the liquid from BSF larvae in it.

Re:New Environmental Forum - 2005/10/19 17:47 Hi
We had help from the University but no one could test the soil in Canada that we could find the last person that could at the University had left 2 years earlier So could not test after the worms had gone thru the soil . I still would like to try it if i could find someone to test.

Jerry, you are a true Texan. If yer gonna do it, do it BIG...LOL

I have a pit that everything I wouldn't throw directly to worms goes in. It is full of BSF. I routinely throw a couple handfulls of them to my layers. They love 'em. I can see the feed idea working.

The bio-diesel sounds interesting. Me and my Cummins may need to make the 1 1/2 hour trip north to see you...LOL
