Compost tea etc - 2006/01/12 13:44 I keep earthworms in a number of 275l pvc drums. I feed them on fresh cattle manure only as I would like to keep their diet unchanged and thereby obtain an end product that does not change too much. At this stage I only harvest the liquid that comes out of a drainge hole at the bottom of each drum. I usually dilute this liquid and use it in my experimental herb garden. I have yet to harvest any castings and am not sure that I will get any - however, maybe this takes longer?
I would like to manufacture a compost tea from the vermicompost - is this possible? and how? My end goal is to be able to use such a product on a larger scale ie 60 acres. Any comments?

Re:Compost tea etc - 2006/01/12 14:08 Hi, Christian...yes, you'll get castings..have some now. Your compost tea won't require finished castings, however you'll love the castings tea as well. You need to correspond with one of our directors, Jerry Quinn, on this subject, as he's doing this very thing now...Seeya, Bob www.trinity-ranch.com

Re:Compost tea etc - 2006/01/12 15:06 hmm..I think that drainage is not something I would put on any edible plants. It is just a leachate and could harbor pathogens. Susan Quinby-Honer

Re:Compost tea etc - 2006/01/20 14:18 Christian, you can easily set up a vermicompost tea maker with minimal time and $$.

Mine consists of a five gallon bucket, an aquarium aerater pump, some tubing, and some airstones. (All those items, except the bucket) can be found in the tropical fish department of any major box store.)

What you want to do is fill your bucket with tepid water, lay the airstones on the bottom of the bucket (these of course are hooked up to the pump with the tubing), and using a cloth/mesh material similar to tulle wrap about two good handfuls of castings or compost in it. This is then tied up with a string and suspended in the bucket...it should only be deep enough to be slightly under water. Although you can now let this mixture bubble away for a couple days and let it go at that you can encourage much more "good bacteria" by supplying a good dollop of molasses to the mix. This will give the bacteria more sugar to feed on, thereby multiplying them much quicker. (I've even used cornmeal for this purpose.)

The bucket of brew will develop a "head", resembling a root beer float(!) and at this point you can then used the end product. This can be diluted at a ratio of 1:10 or more, depending on its use.

Hope this is helpful to you!

Re:Compost tea etc - 2006/01/20 15:15 When the compost is "brewed" the way horsehoe described, THAT is compost tea.
Here is on of my favorite sites to peruse about making compost tea. It includes just about everything you need to know and has pictures.

Re:Compost tea etc - 2006/01/21 01:01 Susan,

I am glad you found that site and posted it. Bruce Deuley is a good friend of mine. He has radio shows in the south Texas area.

I would NEVER use leachate on anything edible. There are a lot of garden plants that will take of the pathogens, especially e-coli.

For small gardeners the five gallon bucket with the aquarium pump works very well.

We build them from the five gallon size to a continuous flow unit that will produce over 2000 gallons per hour. We have these machines hooked up to irrigation systems on cotton farms and sod farms. We also spray crops with it.

Re:Compost tea etc - 2006/02/09 13:45 Thanks for the help Susan - I will check that site out. It's amazing, because where I live not too many people know much about this topic and if they did they probably would part with too much info.

Re:Compost tea etc - 2006/02/11 14:30 Bob, the link you gave above isn't "click-able". It looks to me though that if you put an "S" at the end of 'solution' (making it plural) the hyperlink will be active.

That's a great site, I enjoyed reading the info over there. Thanks!
