?Red worm disease? - 2006/02/26 22:17 Hi, I noticed that my red worm population is declining. I noticed that a couple of them looked like someone had tied something tight around them in multiple places. I have seen this before in earth worms. Is this a disease or something that I am doing wrong? What can I do? thanks in advance KathyT

Re:?Red worm disease? - 2006/02/27 11:06 I have a new set up, used a plastic storage bin with a few slits it the bottom. I set it up using shredded leaves. Have fed the worms various kitchen scraps which include coffee grounds. I did slow up feeding them because it seemed that there was a lot left over. Maybe I slowed up too much. Re:?Red worm disease? - 2006/02/27 11:43 In reading, I think worms do not get disease. Something you may be seeing is a condition known as "protein poisoning", which is a build-up of acid within the bedding, caused by the decomposition of the food. If a lot of food was added at once, it could cause this. I would, no matter what, add some fresh bedding. When feeding your bin you should be careful not to mix the food in with the bedding. Sometimes this can happen if you were to be poking around in the bin or harvesting a bin that had just been fed. Susan Quinby-Honer
