Lowes / Home Depo Cow Manure - 2006/03/12 22:43 Hi, One more question. Anybody have any experience with bagged cow manure from Lowes / Home Depo. I tried it in a test bed and it didn't seen to kill the worms, but im not sure this stuff has any nutritional value for the worms. The bag says it is composted cow manure, but who knows what else has been done to it.

I'll keep looking for a local fresh source, but I really would like to stop feeding fresh food scraps 100%.

Anybody else using this source of cow manure, or have a suggestion of something I could get in the city as a food source.

Re:Lowes / Home Depo Cow Manure - 2006/03/13 11:00 That bagged composted cow manure will not hurt your worms and would be a food source.

Why do you not want to feed fresh food scraps? What else would you do with them? (You should know that my goal is to make use of my household food/paper scraps and not buy anything for feedstock for the worms.)

Re:Lowes / Home Depo Cow Manure - 2006/03/17 05:24 It's alright for feed, but fresher cow manure would have more energy and nutritional benefit. Corn meal is a reasonably inexpensive feed as well. Seeya, Bob www.trinity-ranch.com

Re:Lowes / Home Depo Cow Manure - 2006/03/18 15:16 Hi redhen

I was just looking for a way to cut down on the issue I had last winter and provide a more stable food supply. Issues? Well I'm still new to this and I overfed and possibly killed a few in the process. So far coming out of winter, I have far less worms then I had going into the winter and then ones I do have are really big tough looking worms. These are the survivors of a not so great worm keeper. Anyway, I was just looking for a low cost way to feed. I'll still give them food scraps, just not as much as I was giving. Unless I'm totally off base I can heap a pound of cow manure on top and just let em have it for a while. Maybe throw in some fresh food in small bits. I also have to review why I picked up a little bit more salt then I should have during the winter.

Can?t wait to tell the wife I?ll need an air conditioner for our shed to keep the works cool. It gets 100 degrees here in Oklahoma and way to hot without something to keep them cool. :>

I have 5 pounds of new worms and 5 new bins going and we will see if I can do a better job this year.
