What happened? What did I do wrong/ - 2006/03/19 09:53 A little background-I live in Mi.-I kept my worms in an old chest freezer [slightly ventilated],in an unheated space,in a metal garbage can, with a 60 watt light bulb over the top for heat. They made it thru the winter okay, but 2 weeks ago when I checked on them the bedding seemed to be getting moist. Last week when I checked on them the bedding seemed very moist and just a little steamy. Yesterday when I checked they were all dead! The bedding smelled sour and was quite steamy! Did I get it too hot,or too moist,or what do you think happened? I have now shut off the light bulb. Will this bedding be safe to use again? Thanks for any help and/or suggestions you might be able to give me!

Re:What happened? What did I do wrong/ - 2006/03/19 11:31 Truckdriverx72.. What were you feeding the worms? What was the bedding? How many worms do you think you had? 60 watts probably did put out some heat. Steam is not a good sign if the worms are in a contained system, as they can not get away from the heat.
Sorry about all the questions but it is necessary to make a guess at what happened. You should be able to use whatever you have left in that bin for making a new bin. Perhaps there are cocoons still viable, even if your adult worms are gone.

Re:What happened? What did I do wrong/ - 2006/03/19 12:52 Hi Truckdriverx72,
I also experienced a couple of abrupt losses, caused by different things.
The first time was similar to yours, in 2002, I saw steam rising out of the worm bin, that happened two days after feeding about a gallon of dry beat pulp, when I watered it, it expanded greatly, then of course in a few days, it soured and steamed, I lost most of the worms in that bin. I watered it down, stirred it, drained it, added lots of torn paper, and then forgot about it. About a month later, I noticed lots of worm hatchlings, I then started to feed the bin as normal, and I recovered from that incident.
Last year, in April, I noticed a motor oil like weird smell, coming from another bin, on close inspection, there were worms on the surface, but when I lightly touched them, they didn't move. Digging through the bin, I noticed they were all dead and decomposing. Then another bin started to get a similar smell.
I racked my brain for weeks trying to determine what killed them. I thought it was a combination of certain foods given at the wrong time, and sudden warm weather. Then I remembered I had fed a can of bad fruit. This can sprang a leak in my cabinet, it was a can that was stored in an unheated area for a while, then returned to my kitchen cabinet, it was slightly rusty. I split it between 2 bins. Two-thirds in one bin, and one-third in another.
It was those 2 bins that I had losses. The second affected bin, I manage to rescue about a pound of worms. I cleaned out both bins, and tossed the old bedding in and out door bin, and covered it, too keep animals out.
I learned even worms can suffer from food poisoning.
So my advise to worm farmers, be wary of feeding canned foods that went bad.
And also not to over feed grain type foods, and sugary foods like dried beet pulp. I still feed beet pulp, but I never feed more than a half cup of dry at a time, as dried beet pulp expands 4 times its bulk, when wet.
Set your old bedding asside for now, to see if you might get some hatchlings later. As the egg capsules can survive extremes of heat and cold.
How big is your chest freezer bin? I would advise to have several small sytems going, rather than one big one, just incase there is a loss, one can recover. An old timer saying "Never keep all your eggs in one basket". Is good advise.
Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

Re:What happened? What did I do wrong/ - 2006/03/19 17:31 Hi Susan- Thanks for the reply! I only had a couple hundred worms left from last year, so I just tried to over-winter them. My garbage can in the freezer took up about 1/2 the space once I insulated it with some used straw from cleaning out the doghouse last fall-I put fresh in and figured I oughta be able to use old stuff-it worked surprizeingly! I fed my can about a 3# coffee can full of kitchen scraps every week. What I think happened was not enough air circulation because of the insulating straw all around the can-generated too much heat[along with the 60 watt bulb] once the outside temp started moderating-creating too much moisture, causing more heat, etc. The sour smell [fermentation]? is what really had me concerned about being able to re-use the bedding-or just put it outside and let it finish composting?

Re:What happened? What did I do wrong/ - 2006/03/19 19:11 hmmm..A couple hundred worms are not a lot of worms. What were you using in the can for bedding? If the worms were not keeping up with the food the bin could go anaerobic pretty quickly, hence smell. Did the can and fridge have drainage holes?
I would think if you added more fresh bedding and dried things up a bit you might be able to turn things around.

Re:What happened? What did I do wrong/ - 2006/03/21 08:49 Yes, I realize a couple hundred is not alot-just leftovers from last years fish bait supply. The over-wintering thing was just an experiment. Drainage holes were established. Bedding was mostly partially decomposed compost. The hope was to compost some and increase worm population. If I can figure out what went wrong I can do something a little different next year. Maybe even realize my goals!

Re:What happened? What did I do wrong/ - 2006/03/21 11:25 Truckdriverx72.. I am thinking your only problem was too few worms and lack of a good carbon source,(shredded paper, perhaps). All is not lost. I would just start adding some shredded paper, dry it up a bit and see if the worm population starts to increase. You would not need to feed for a awhile. Susan Quinby-Honer
