wild seeds/weeds - 2006/04/11 21:09 Hi Experts,

I am currently using cow dungs from cows that are grazing in the open field. The cow dungs are left in the open for at least 21 days being feed to the worms.

When the vermicasts are collected and used in the potted plants and organic farms, wild grasses are found to be growing very well, which is not well accepted by the users.I am very sure the wild weed seeds were not diested by the cows and during the waiting period of 21 days. I then cover the cowdungs with a plastic film to increase the temperature, but the problem remains the same.

I look forward to your expert advice and with many thanks.

Best regards

Re:wild seeds/weeds - 2006/04/12 09:29 I've found that solarization works for horse manure. A few weeks in a black plastic bag left in the sun kills everything in horse manure. I'd expect the same to be true for cow manure. WormMainea.com

Re:wild seeds/weeds - 2006/04/16 00:17 You must maintain a minimum of 131 degrees for three days in a closed compost system and 15 days in an open windrow or static pile to kill weed seeds and pathogens.

Re:wild seeds/weeds - 2006/07/01 16:49 If the cow dung is being left too long it may be drying out too much for the plastic bag to do its work. Try adding a bit of moisture to the bagged manure to encourage anaerobic digestion.
