Any Advice PLEASE - Compact Soil and Worms - 2006/05/15 04:58 Hello All

I'm new to this web site but am really after some advice.

I have a garden with poor drainage across the lawn, I am currently digging a soak away to help with this, whilst digging I have noticed the first few feet of soil is very compact with very few worms in it, and am wondering if this is contributing to the poor drainage.

Can anyone recommend some worms that will live in the first few feet of soil under my lawn and help to break up the soil, if so where can I get some from in England.

PLEASE HELP

Regards

Re:Any Advice PLEASE - Compact Soil and Worms - 2006/05/16 07:59 Mark I wish I had an answer for you, but I don't. I have got to start keeping articles I have read pertaining to worms in a file some place on my computer so I can have them at my finger tips when someone asks a questions. It seems that I read someplace that without knowing quite a bit about the make up of your soil, just bringing in worms that you will hope burrow in, doesn't work so well.

Re:Any Advice PLEASE - Compact Soil and Worms - 2006/05/16 08:38 I?m not familiar with English worms but you might try adding shredded news print to the surface of the garden area covered with peat moss keep moist and just add your native worms given time your garden will soften up FEED IT TO THE WORMS

Mark,

I am very new at keeping worms but have seen some soil in my time. I think you need to be looking at drainage rather than worms. Worms won't live there unless there is something to eat. I have drained areas of ground by digging trenches and filling partly with gravel or using agricultural pipe. Building the lawn area up so it is higher might work too.

Re:Any Advice PLEASE - Compact Soil and Worms - 2006/05/16 23:01 I have had some good results in compacted areas by using what is known as a 'bulb auger'.
Fits in a drill like a bit, but is 12-18" long and they come in diameters between 1 and 3 inch that I've seen.
I used a 2-incher in my side yard last year, and the plants there have done much better since.
I drilled down to the depth of the flutes about every square foot.
Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.
