Letting worms scour - 2006/05/16 08:03 Putting worms in peat a few days to let worms scour before you sell them........

I am a country girl and when something around here scours it ain't such a good thang What is meant by "letting worms scour?"

Re:Letting worms scour - 2006/05/16 23:31 Glenda - I think it'd be more along these lines, although I don't agree with the suggestion, as castings should be pretty neutral regardless of input:
3 : to clean by purging
4 : to remove dirt and debris from (as a pipe or ditch)
5 : to free from foreign matter or impurities by or as if by washing

I know they do that with crabs and such, since they're gonna be eaten by humans (LOVE crab), but don't see the need for wormies unless they're headed for some specific requirement, or if the grower is using some kinda 'glow-in-the-dark' feedstock.
Y'all have fun, whatever you're doing.

Re:Letting worms scour - 2006/05/17 19:26 The only other thing my worms would be used for is bait. It was those that were talking about bait that mentioned the scouring. Maybe fish like a worm that is not full of.........uhhhhhhhh..... castings

Re:Letting worms scour - 2006/05/17 22:38 Maybe they are doing like one of my customers in Mexico. They are making health food pills from them.

Re:Letting worms scour - 2006/05/18 12:11 Regarding worm scouring regardless of the reason would to have the worms purge themselves of soil by placing them in a clean environment, like in clean damp news print and feeding them the likes of cornmeal, after which the gut is cleaned and it time to fry up a bunch FEED IT TO THE WORMS

Re:Letting worms scour - 2006/05/18 15:53 Hi, Jerry

OK, I cannot resist asking this. Do you know what health benefits the worms are supposed to have?

Re:Letting worms scour - 2006/05/18 20:14 Hummmm, I am a new, urban farmer. I have 3 acres, some pasture, a few sheep and a few bunnies. I could sure use some more income. I have been struggling with my issues of raising livestock that needs to be killed to get value out of it. So now you are saying that worms are used for food. Is there really a market for these critters, or is it just a few people frying up their own meals' worth?

OK, now I will do the really stupid thing and hit the "submit" button and then be prepared to duck the laughter and flying casting balls thrown at me.

Re:Letting worms scour - 2006/05/18 22:55 Glenda makes a note...Do not purchase health food supplements from Mexico

Hair has a lot of protein also, but I can't see myself eating that either

Laying all jokes aside, a few years ago there was a story in our Rural Electric newspaper about some people somewhere in Missouri that raised worms and they were trying to push them as healthy to eat because of the high protein, they even had a recipe for fried worms used for a pizza topping. I didn't eat pizza for weeks after I read that story

I think I will just leave the eating or worms to the fishies.

Re:Letting worms scour - 2006/05/20 01:44 They make lombriz flour, which is worm flour.

If you would like to check out their website, type in Lombricultura 21 in you search engine and be sure to click on translate or you will not be able to read it if you are like I am and do not know spanish.

These people have one of the largest worm operations in the world. They originally bought 6,000 pounds of worms to start.

We sell them Harvesters, Screeners, Compost Machines, and Compost Tea Machines.

Re:Letting worms scour - 2006/05/20 09:05 Hi, Jerry

Thank you!! Facinating.....

It sounds like that would be a great thing to feed to young birds or anything that might have a hard time eating that needs a food boost.

Re:Letting worms scour - 2006/05/21 23:03 I used to hear that the "Alabama Jumper" that you get off of the top of the ground under leaves needed to be put in something to scour them to strenghten their skin so they would not break in two when placing them on the hook. They are real delicate and sometimes break just from wiggling so much when handling them. Some that I talked to said it didn't really help.

Re:Letting worms scour - 2006/05/29 18:27 Happy Memorial Day to all especially all our military past & present.

I have Alabama Jumpers aka Pheretima Hawayana or Amynthas Gracilus. They are a very hardy worm and very very popular as bait here in So. CA. They jump when the light hits them and will jump around in the water and do not drown very fast.
Have a great day,
MaryKay

Re:Letting worms scour - 2006/07/01 00:32 Anyone that has not looked at the above mentioned website should read about what all they are doing with worms. It is quite fascinating. They are making their products for human consumption as well as animals.

The worm has the perfect immune system.
