Wanting to get started in New Zealand - 2006/07/25 07:26 Hi everyone.
I have been doing a lot of reading in here over the last couple of days and on other websites the last couple of weeks. Are there any other kiwi's on here that could tell me where I can find canadian or european night crawlers. I am going to get some reds and tigers but will also be looking for nc's. Also I havent seen any posts on feeding sheep manure. I think I can lay my hands on tons of this from under shearing sheds. Has anyone used this as food?

Re:Wanting to get started in New Zealand - 2006/07/25 20:09 I have some sheep and have put some of the manure in the worm bins. It is a "cool" manure, so can be used without composting or worry about it overheating. When I put it in, it disappeared as did the rabbit manure I also put in and the worms are doing great. My problem is getting the sheep manure to where I can use it. They are in the pasture and so far the only way I have found to get it is to pick up the little pellets by hand. That is not a very effective way to get worm food. Maybe a sheep poo vacume?

Re:Wanting to get started in New Zealand - 2006/07/25 21:58 I presume you only have a few sheep and no large woolshed. Over here there are a lot of sheep farms and when it comes to shearing time or crutching the shearing shed and yards are fulled with sheep overnight and the sheep pens in the shed has slated floors so all the droppings go through under the shed. There is shitloads excuse the pun

Re:Wanting to get started in New Zealand - 2006/07/26 09:33 Getafix - Yes, I only have 10 small primitive sheep and they self shed, so except for the few reasons to catch them (shots, etc) they are free in the pasture. They do gather in the gate corner where the water and salt is, so the poo is concentrating there. I will come up with some kind of poo scooper. Scooping a bucket full from under the rabbit cages is so much easier.
