Will worms smell citronella or neem oil? - 2005/10/09 13:09 Hi Everybody,

I have a can of worms, the stackable bin. It has been going pretty well and I'm not the only one monitoring it (which is good because I don't think of worms as pets yet), but has anybody ever had worms die because there is incense nearby with neem oil and citronella in it?

I got it to help with the fruit fly population and hadn't even lit any but after 3 days the flies decreased dramatically and then this morning, there were 6-7 worms that had jumped ship.

I fed them coffee gounds and leftover lettuce and toast and sprayed water, but 3 hours later and 2 more had tried to commit hari kiri. The incense package is out of the picture, but 100 fruitflies are back.

What's up?

Re:Will worms smell citronella or neem oil? - 2005/10/09 13:38 Has your weather changed in the past few days? Ours has here in Raleigh. We had a big tropical depression from Tammy and my worms have all been heading for high country. All of my indoor bins (many are COW's) have loads of worms all along the tops and right underneath the lids. Some have managed to leave but I try to keep putting the others back down in their bedding. The humidity has dropped today and perhaps with the cold front moved through they will settle back down. I would consider the weather first for their behavior. Susan Quinby-Honer

Re:Will worms smell citronella or neem oil? - 2005/10/10 15:07 Thx 4 the info RedHen,
No more escapees seen lately from the Can O'Worms.
They are all off the lid today and yes the weather did change. It rained, got cold, warmed up a little and now it's drizzling out. I think it must have been the weather. Wow, they sure seem sensitive!
I suppose I'll have read up on Zorba's attractive plastic covered fruifly traps for those flies.
I'd put the citronella/neem oil incense back out,but it is strong smelling, even when not lit & gives me headaches.
TTYL,
