C'mon in! - 2005/10/14 05:46 As I entered the site this morning, I noticed one member,(myself),and eighteen guests on line...Folks, don't be shy; feel free to register and post on the forums. So many times I've seen a post where someone says they've been 'lurking' here for months or years, but afraid to ask a question or post lest they look 'dumb'. The only dumb questions are those that remain unasked. We have a great resource here, please feel free to use it. C'mon in! Seeya, Bob www.trinity-ranch.com

Re:C'mon in! - 2005/10/14 07:09 Hello Bob,
Thought I was the only one up this early. Going by the time on your post I was turning in my daily weather observations to the National Weather Service. My daily morning routine is make coffee, report to the NWS and then drop in here to catch up on the latest gossip. Not necessarily in that order. :>
Have a good one!
Larry

The questions and information continue to be great.

I am giving a presentation at a local garden club meeting tomorrow and plan to direct the gardeners here.

Re:C'mon in! - 2005/10/14 12:44 Yes,you said it Bob. Come on in all ye fine people and stewards of our earth! Register & LOGIN! I want to see more votes on Insectivore's picture, before the poll gets changed --this weekend.
Judy Ann, how nice of you to share our site with the gardeners. I wonder if your garden club has any great pictures of gardens after using earthworm castings. I can't wait until the picture under "Let the Party Begin!" gets changed to something more colorful!
If you want, submit some pictures (of above ground items....) Don't ask me how, ask Scooter!

Re:C'mon in! - 2005/10/20 18:40 Thank you, Billy. Folks, an interesting incident....A few months ago, Billy and I were visiting on the phone...the brand we use for an avatar when I post is our Trinity Ranch brand..Billy clicked on our web site, and saw this brand. Being from Texas, his family were cattlemen for many years; since way back in the 1800's, his family's brand was exactly the same, but inverted + ours is : + +..........................
+ + ............+ ...oh well, ....Seeya, Bob

Re:C'mon in! - 2005/10/21 13:53 It was wierd when I first saw it...LOL

try this Bob...

Yours

my family:

This is currently my dad's brand, as he is still living and running stock. So I have a different brand for my personal stock. When he passes, I will pick it up and start registering it as my own, for this county in Texas.

Re:C'mon in! - 2005/10/21 23:10 So Billy / Bob,
Since you have brands (please inform this country girl gone to the city a couple generations now)
does that mean you routinely take a red hot triple (ttt)crossed piece of iron and burn the backsides of some animals?
Just wondering...

Re:C'mon in! - 2005/10/21 23:48 Sure thing Bubbles, Bob brands all his worms that way. Right Bob? KuznLes

Re:C'mon in! - 2005/10/22 06:14 Takes all day, Les, lol. Boy, those Euros sure are tough hided....No, Bubbles, we don't hot brand anymore, but have done so in the past. Today many people utilize liquid nitrogen and 'freeze' brand, which causes the hair to turn white with no pain. Seeya, Bob www.trinity-ranch.com

Re:C'mon in! - 2005/10/25 08:06 Many used hot brands up to the early 80's, I would say. Now most use nitrogen, as Bob said, if they even bother. Times have changed. Depends on the size of your herd, and the time you plan on running them.

Re:C'mon in! - 2005/10/25 08:24 Yessir, times have changed...worms sell for more money per pound than cows do....branding and ear notching were a necessity in the 'old west'due to open range and lack of fences. Herds mixed and had to be sorted by markings at roundup. Seeya, Bob www.trinity-ranch.com

Re:C'mon in! - 2005/10/25 09:00 What?
Worms sell for more per pound that cattle! Tell that to Daisy Borden (when you're behind a good fence.)
Well, I am quite relieved to hear of the new way of branding. Dentists should take the ranchers cue, leave the barbaric needles and use laughing gas.
By the way, when I checked in yesterday, I saw 36 guests online and at one point, 55!

Re:C'mon in! - 2005/10/25 11:25 Wyoming wouldn't recognize a freeze brand as legal, even thought they were more effective and didn't hurt or damage leather. And, I thought they were kind of sexy on the black angus cattle.

We have a brand too: Bar JD -JD Only ever put it on our horses and picnic tables. I put it on wooden crochet hooks when I carve them.

It really stands out on black doesn't it? Around here it really depends on the size of your operation and how you "work them". Either way is equally effective. The advantage of the nitro is ease/speed and as you said, no damage to the leather. Neither of which matters to our ribeye's and hamburgers...

Our horses are "marked", so it's not obvious.

Re:C'mon in! - 2005/10/26 14:10 I wonder why Wyoming wouldn't okay the nitrogen freeze branding. Is there a large constituency of branding poker manufacturers with the politicians awaiting their next fundraiser?

Regarding fleas, I read when Hawaiins first got them from visitors, they considered them the souls of dead white men.

Now for a worm topic, if fresh mint is not good, does
that go for mint tea as well? Our COW has gotten several dozen tea bags of it, minus the little staple, interspersed with coffee grounds, shredded paper and produce...

How long before the cow will have castings? We started it a few months ago... I hear different things.

Back to work!

Re:C'mon in! - 2005/10/26 15:43 Bubbles, there are some castings in your Cow now....the longer you let the worms work on em, the better they'll be. I'd wait til all worms have moved up and new capsules hatched before using em...Seeya, Bob www.trinity-ranch.com
