 worm feed - 2005/10/16 08:38 Hello, I?m begining with a cow; I have read a lot about feeding of worms but I have a question; can I use Onion, ananas, leek in my can?

 Re:worm feed - 2005/10/16 09:38 Hi, Melkor. The accepted wisdom says onions are somewhat antibiotic and not good to feed. However, I've found they do just fine as they start to decompose. As you're just starting, I'd add onion and leek in smaller quantities until you're comfortable with your program.  Re:worm feed - 2005/10/16 11:49 I have many COW's and put just about everything in there. I have found that it is all about balance, as to what to put in. If you were to dump a load of onions, you would find out what does and does not like it. Same with oranges. If I have a lot of something, I will put it in my in-ground bins as they are more stable and forgiving and the worms will get to it when they feel like it. Susan Quinby-Honer

 Re:worm feed - 2005/10/17 08:43 I have always babied my bins, feeding them just about enough, mixing in paper, adding moisture, keeping them quiet and topped with paper for 'lids', freezing food, crushing eggshell, talking to them -- dream on.

I have a friend who put his in a garage (the best heat was a morning sun, would NEVER add bedding, dumped his morning grapefruit and coffee grounds in, let it get a little hot (probably saved the worms during the winter) and generally neglected them. The bin was so gooey because of not enough paper that you could hear the worms moving around through.

 Re:worm feed - 2005/10/18 00:05 Part of my feed comes from the produce department of the local grocery. Whatever they send, I grind up and fee to the worms. There is alwaya a variety, but the onions and all go into the bins for feed. The worms must like it because they eat a lot of it. KuznLes
