Worm retailers in Canada? - 2007/06/04 22:00Hey people
It's the Mushroom guy again.
I'm just wondering if anyone could recommend retailer for composting worms in Canada? Ideally in BC.
I've googled and not a lot really comes up and what does come up seems to be bin kits rather than just the worms themselves.
I could perhaps drive over the border into the states to get them, but I'm not sure how the border guards would react to a bag of worms coming into the country.
All the best,
Barnaby.Anyone want some sawdust?

Re:Worm retailers in Canada? - 2007/06/05 10:49Hi Barn, Welcome to the forum!!
When I first decided to get my worms, I faced the same situation as yourself. A friend from Ontario recommended a phone number: 1-800-compost. I called and they were very helpful. I've ordered from 2 growers they recommended to me and was extremely pleased with each shipment.
It pays to shop around and don't be shy to ask lots of questions. The folks I ordered from actually welcomed my questions. I felt like such a doorknob calling them up with my petty concerns, but in the end, I'm very glad I did. (and so are my worms)
Best of luck to ya!! Miss D

They said I could actually go and pick up a bin kit TODAY! So that's great. I can actually go take a look at what I'm getting before I hand over any cash. They gave me a price for worms at $22 for half a pound. Which seems pretty good to me, especially if I can pick them up when I want them and forget about the shipping.
I was thinking of making my own box, but I'm going to get a bin kit, which comes with everything I need to get started. It was $70, which isn't cheap, but I think I'd rather start with a kit than go it alone for the first time.
Thanks again people and I'll keep you posted.
Cheers,

Re:Worm retailers in Canada? - 2007/06/06 16:19Is the $22 USD or Canadian? Because if it's USD, those are very expensive worms. I just purchased 2 pounds of Red Wigglers from a farm in South Carolina for $40 USD. If you are purchasing Night Crawlers, then I have no idea. I'm strictly an EF man.

Re:Worm retailers in Canada? - 2007/06/06 22:53Cool, Barn!
As for the price, I would assume the price is CAD, but these days does it really matter? Have you seen the exchange rate lately?

Re:Worm retailers in Canada? - 2007/06/07 19:43Yep, that's $22 Canadian, which is about $21 American, for half a pound of Red Wigglers.
Worms seem to just be more expensive out here in Canada. I can't get a worm distributor in the states to mail some to me, but that's a border control policy, not their policy.
If there was a cheaper option, I'd be all over it, but I'm really not seeing that there's much choice for me.
I thought about going to a farm in Washington and driving them over, but I can't find one! I don't know, I think my googleing skills just aren't up to much.Anyone want some sawdust?

Re:Worm retailers in Canada? - 2007/06/18 14:08I've been a way for a while, but I just wanted to say thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
I must say though, that I've been shocked by how few worm suppliers have actually replied to e-mails.
It seems the most expensive place is probably the best simply because they're actually responding to my enquiries and even e-mailed to check up on the worms they sold me.
The next time I'm sure I'll be in Washington, I'll follow up on the suppliers there again.
All I want is 5lb for around $100, is that asking too much?
Anyways, thanks again guys.
